MIRI: For two decades, residents of Kampung Desa Jaya and the surrounding areas, including Lambir Prison and Sekolah Tunas Bakti (juvenile detention centre) in Lambir have been waking up to a nauseating smell.

The source is none other than the Lambir Solid Waste Transfer station, which has been there since 2004.

Residents at the surrounding areas claimed that leachate from the waste transfer station had flowed into the nearby monsoon drains, creating not only the bad smell but also polluting the nearby residential area.

“For years, we have been complaining about the stench, and had requested the relevant authority to re-locate the station to a more suitable area,” said Sekolah Tunas Bakti visitors board chairman Penghulu Randi Elon.

“However, years have gone by, and it seems that nothing has been done to tackle the problem as the waste solid station is still there.”

He expressed hope that the relevant authorities could do something drastic and soonest to resolve the matter. “We are urging the authorities to act now.”

“There is no of getting away from it (the smell), and when it comes to organising open house or wedding at the village (Kampung Desa Jaya), people are hesitant because of the smell,” he stressed.
