KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak (Swinburne Sarawak) will be offering law courses with subjects to include the Native Customary Right (NCR) and Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, this is in response to the Swinburne University of Technology Australia (Swinburne Australia), which has committed to offer the law courses at its Sarawak campus.

“Today, the Academic Senate of Swinburne Australia has agreed to the state’s proposal to set up a Faculty of Law, giving a major in law and offering it as one of the elective subjects.

“Law courses are important so that those who take them up can conduct research and learn about the laws that exist in Sarawak,” he said at SMK Agama Tun Ahmad Zaidi’s 25th Silver Jubilee Thanksgiving Dinner here yesterday.

Abang Johari, who is also Swinburne Sarawak’s Pro-Chancellor, claimed that he was informed that the institutions in Semenanjung Malaysia do not provide elective subjects like NCR or MA63.

“Hence, we need academic study on our NCR and MA63 so that we know how these laws came about, and this is crucial in law courses as it involves the constitution.

“So, you must know the constitution and be well versed in the aspects of the law,” he pointed out.

With the law courses available in Swinburne Sarawak, Abang Johari said students could study there and later further their studies (in law) at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne.

“Once students have graduated, they can become members of the Victorian Bar of Australia as well as lawyers in Malaysia,” he said.

The Swinburne Sarawak campus is jointly owned by Swinburne Australia and the Sarawak government through the Sarawak Foundation.

Apart from Swinburne Sarawak, other higher education institutions wholly owned by the Sarawak government include Curtin University, Sarawak University of Technology (UTS), i-CATS University College and Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).
