Need for speed backfires on locals

KUCHING: They felt a need for speed and put pedal to the metal but, unfortunately for them, they sped right into the arms of the law.

Traffic police promptly arrested the two locals for testing their vehicles’ speed in Sejingkat on Sunday (July 31).

Op Samseng Jalanan was carried out by 23 personnel from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division and Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division from 5.30pm to 1.30am the next day (Aug 1).

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said two men aged 32 and 37, were arrested and taken to Kuching police headquarters at Lorong Demak Indah 6.

“The suspects will be investigated under Section 81(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for racing.

“If convicted, the suspects can be fined up to RM2,000 or, serve a jail term up to six months and up to one year of licence disqualification,” he said.

During the operation, the team had inspected 31 individuals from 25 vehicles and issued a total of 10 traffic summonses to motorists for various offences such as not having a driving licence, failing to produce a driving licence and having a modified exhaust system.

He stated that the operation was carried out to prevent and combat street thugs who drive or ride their vehicles recklessly and dangerously as well as for testing their driving speed.

Ahsmon said the operation will be carried out continuously in an effort to reduce road accident rate especially fatal ones.
