KUCHING:  There is a need to educate the public on the impact of burning rubbish and open burning on the environment, said Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.

While imposing penalties was necessary, he pointed out that the move could only be imposed if the national environment policy had been strengthened.

“We need to educate the people before imposing the penalties.

“Frankly speaking, educating our community on the issue is not going to be easy.

“To ensure that everyone has a better understanding of the issue, education will definitely take time,” he said when met by reporters yesterday at the Kuching Football Association (Kuching FA) thanksgiving ceremony at Merdeka Palace Hotel here.

Fazzrudin added that the haze from fire outbreaks in Sarawak last year had made the public aware of the negative impacts of rubbish and land fires.
