MIRI: The neighbourhood watch (RT) is essential in helping the government enhance unity amongst the various races in the country, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Wira Dr Md Farid Md Rafik.

Md Farid was impressed with the strong unity shown by Sarawakians and that they are able to live together in peace and harmony.

“Putrajaya is impressed with the strong unity that the people of Sarawak have shown,” he said.

Speaking at the ‘Jom Jumpa RT’ programme held yesterday at Senior Citizen Service Centre Miri, he said that the RT could become a ‘facilitator’ in solving problems pertaining to community wellbeing.

He said the federal government via his department is looking into various approaches to help enhance the role of RTs.

“We want RTs to be relevant in helping us to ensure of the wellbeing of the community and that unity is preserved,” he pointed out.

With 8,200 RTs nationwide, Md Farid pointed out the important role of RTs as the crucial ‘agent’ for the government in disseminating information to strengthen unity.

He said Putrajaya will always listen and assist whenever they can to ensure unity is well preserved in Malaysia.

Also present were National Unity and Integration Department Sarawak director Dirwana Azool and acting Miri Resident Abdul Aziz Yusoff.

During the event, nearly 200 RT from Miri, Sibuti and Marudi were present.
