KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has decided that food outlets and bistros in Kuching District will only be allowed to operate from 6am to 10pm effective Thursday (Oct 29).

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas also announced that all public and private gymnasiums in Kuching District would be required to close with immediate effect.

“For both official and social ceremonies which involve public gatherings in Kuching District, only a maximum of 200 attendees is allowed,” he said at the SDMC Covid-19 update press conference on Wednesday (Oct 28).

He said organisers of such events should ensure  hand sanitisers were provided, physical distancing  practised  and that all attendees  wore face masks.

“With regard to the decision to close entertainment centres which was announced on Oct 27, these centres refer to pubs, bars, lounges, discotheques, dance halls, cabarets, and karaokes,” said Uggah, who is also SDMC chairman.

With regard to schools, he said that Kuala Lumpur would be announcing the status of schools in Kuching District.

He said many members of the public were concerned about the matter and wondered whether schools in the district would be directed to close. So far, only two schools have been instructed to close for seven days.

He said that Kuching remained a Covid-19 red zone with a total of 69 local infections reported within the past 14 days.

“This means there is one district categorised as a red zone in Sarawak while the 39 other districts remain green,” said Uggah.

He urged the public to avoid attending parties, functions, and gatherings for the next few weeks in light of the current covid-19 circumstances.
