THE microalgae industry is a new one, where carbon stored underground under the carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) programme can be used to produce high quality biofuel if the carbon is mixed with microalgae.

Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni explained this when answering questions from Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman during the third day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Today (Nov 23).

He said from high quality biofuel, it then could be utilised in the aviation industry.

“This algae industry can be carried out in the village.

“It is because the planting of algae can easily be done in water tanks in the village and the villagers will provide and supply the processing plant with the algae.”

When asked on factors considered by SEDC Energy cooperating with Petronas for the production of hydrogen electrolyser, he said SEDC Energy and Petronas were partners in producing hydrogen electrolyser.

“This is because SEDC and Petronas are partners that are currently conducting research and development (R&D).

“And from the R&D, there are more than 400 scientists at the Petronas R&D centre and one is a Sarawakian.

“Therefore, this is a new industry direction for Sarawak.”
