TATAU: Every new longhouse should have safety features.

Native Laws and Customs Assistant Minister Datuk John Sikie Tayai said although construction work would require higher costs, it will help to contain the fire.

“In addition, consider areas that are not prone to floods such as low-lying areas by the river when choosing a location to build new longhouses.

“When building a new longhouse to replace the current one due to the increasing number of occupants, it should have 20 doors or 15 doors the least,” he said when officiating at the ngentak rumah (groundbreaking ceremony) of Rumah Gilbert Ngadi at Sungai Kelawit here on Sunday (Sept 27).

Sikie who is also Kakus assemblyman further announced minor rural projects (MRPs) worth RM25,000 to Rh Gilbert Ngadi’s village development and security committee (JKKK) and RM5,000 to its women’s bureau.

Also present were Sikie’s wife Datin Melia Gelen, Tatau district senior administrative officer Long Jok, and community leaders Penghulu Allister Ali and Penghulu Micheal Agul.
