KUCHING: The construction of a new market in Pekan Kapit is expected to boost the local economy through increased business activities in the area.

The RM5 million project, which will feature both wet and dry market concepts, began construction in March and is scheduled to be completed by November 2024.

Kapit District Council (MDK) mayor Lating Minggang said the construction of the new market was in response to public demand for a new trading place to accommodate the growing number of traders in Kapit.

“For this project, 95 stalls are allocated for dry market vendors while 10 stalls are for wet market vendors.

“This market is a ‘Projek Rakyat’ approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during his visit to Kapit,” he added during the groundbreaking ceremony of the new market officiated by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Nanta expressed hope that the project would be completed within the given timeframe, allowing people to start doing business in the new market immediately.

Nanta added that the construction of the new market proved that Kapit town was advancing along with other parts of Sarawak, particularly in expanding employment opportunities for products from rural areas.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Kapit Resident Galong Luang and his deputy, Robert Liman Deli, MDK Secretary Kelimbik Sibat, as well as department heads and local community leaders were also present at the groundbreaking ceremony.
