New Miri-Marudi road proposed

Penguang inspects a section of the Miri-Marudi road which was affected by a recent landslide.

KUCHING: A new road linking Miri to Marudi has been proposed to replace the existing road.

Assistant Minister for Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed in principle to the construction of the new road, which will also link Mulu with Long Lama and Tinjar.

“The cost of maintenance and repair of the old road is increasing each day and it has reached a point where it is more cost effective to build a new road.

“This is among the factors why I suggested that we build a new road to connect Miri and Marudi,” he said in a Facebook post.

Today, the Marudi assemblyman visited the road which was affected by a recent landslide, causing it to be cut off.

He also visited other parts of the road which had been repaired as well as inspecting the road blocks to Marudi and spoke with the frontliners who were manning their post.

In another development, Penguang said the Marudi District Disaster Management Committee had conducted an operation to monitor the compliance of Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the town.

“I am satisfied with the level of compliance shown by the traders and the public. At the same time, there is also room for improvement,” he said.
