New record high — 255 cases in Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 255 Covid-19 positive cases on Sunday (Jan 24) — a new daily record surpassing Friday’s 229 high, bringing the state’s tally to 3,379.

At the same time, the state also recorded two more Covid-19 related deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities so far to 28.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 71 of the new cases were reported in Sibu, Miri (57), Kanowit (30), Song (27), Betong (14), Dalat and Bintulu (nine each), Serian and Subis each recorded eight cases. There were five cases reported in Sarikei and Matu respectively, Kapit and Sebauh reported three cases each, Kuching and Beluru reported two cases respectively while Bukit Mabong and Tatau had one case each.

“Of the 71 cases in Sibu District, 42 involved the Pasai Cluster and 29 were screenings by individuals at health centres in the district.

“In Miri, 25 cases were screenings by individuals with symptoms at health centres in the district, 21 linked to Rakut Cluster, six linked to Jelita Cluster, three linked to Pasai Cluster, one linked to Bah Sayap Cluster and one other was categorised as Import C case from Kanowit district, also linked to Pasai Cluster.

“In Betong, 13 cases involved the Pasai Cluster and one case was individual screening,” it said in a daily Covid-19 update today.

It also mentioned that all cases in Kanowit, Song and Subis districts involved the Pasai Cluster.

Seven cases in Dalat involved the Pasai Cluster while two other cases were individual screenings.

In Bintulu, four cases involved the Rakut Cluster, three involved the Pasai Cluster, and two cases from individual screenings.

In Serian, eight cases were detected due to having close contact to a positive case.

In Sarikei, four cases were individual screenings and one case involved the Pasai Cluster.

In Matu, five cases were individual screenings.

For Kapit and Sebauh districts, both respectively reported two cases of individual screenings and one other case categorised as Import C from Kanowit, which was linked to the Pasai Cluster.

In Kuching, one case was close contact to a positive case and the other was through individual screening.

For the two cases in Beluru district and one each in Bukit Mabong and Tatau districts, all the cases were individual screenings.

As of Sunday (Jan 24), there were eight active Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak, namely the Rakut Cluster, Jelita Cluster and Bah Sayap Cluster in Miri; Bukit Sekubong Cluster in Sebauh; Pasai Cluster in Sibu; Keranji Tabuan Cluster and Stutong Cluster in Kuching; and Mador Cluster in Meradong.

SDMC also said 107 patients had recovered and discharged from hospitals on Sunday — 96 from Sibu Hospital, six from Miri Hospital, and five from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

This brings the total number of recovered and discharged cases to 1,700 or 50.31 percent of total Covid-19 cases in Sarawak.

Also Sunday, there were 1,647 individuals still undergoing treatment at hospital isolation wards in the state — 1,085 in Sibu Hospital, Miri Hospital (294), SGH (154), Bintulu Hospital (83), Kapit Hospital (30) and Limbang Hospital (one).

“Today (Sunday), 379 new person-under-investigation (PUI) cases have been reported and 101 PUIs are still awaiting laboratory results,” SDMC added.
