MIRI: The road linking the new Kuala Batu Satu fish market to the old one has been completed.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the completion today, Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the new market marked the continuity of Miri’s trade and fishing traditions.

The project cost nearly RM300,000 and was implemented by Petronas Carigali Sarawak.

The project was carried out by Petronas Carigali Sarawak as part of their corporate social responsibility.

“Thanks to Petronas Carigali Sarawak for carrying out this project, as we all know, there are gas pipelines buried along this new completed pavement, and with their (Petronas) expertise, the project has been completed successfully,” he said.

Lee also set out his vision to promote fishing tourism in Kampung Kuala Batu Satu and he believed with the new fish market, the vision could be a reality.

“Tourists get an opportunity to learn the art of fishing, learn about the culture adopted by local fishermen and experience the sea life and sea pattern, including the difficulties faced and the adventures,” he said.

“I strongly believe that we can promote fishing tourism at this site (referring to the Kampung Kuala Batu Satu fish markets),” he said.

He urged Kampung Kuala Batu Satu villagers to cooperate to make this vision a reality.

Lee also mentioned the importance of clean beaches.

He later suggested that Petronas Carigali Sarawak, together with Kampung Kuala Batu Satu villagers, do a ‘gotong-royong’, to clean up the beach.
