SIMUNJAN: Soon, it will take just 40 minutes to travel from Kuching to Gedong.

This is possible with the completion of a new RM150 million 35km road passing the oil palm plantation from Gedong to the Ulu Simunjan area.

“Now the journey from Kuching to Gedong takes about one and a half hours.

“Once the new road is completed, it will shorten the travelling journey from Kuching to Gedong to only 40 minutes,” said Gedong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais.

The new road, he added, was among the infrastructure development which would be implemented in the Gedong constituency.

The assemblyman revealed that the new road, which is expected to be completed in two to three years’ time, would make the area more strategic and central.

Naroden was speaking at the handover of the gazette for Bumiputera Communal Reserve under Section 6 of the State Land Code (SLC) and land titles under Section 18 of the SLC (Agriculture and Housing) and the launching of the Kampung Gedong Baru village expansion scheme programme which was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at the Simunjan District Council (MDS) Gedong Community Hall yesterday (Oct 16).

“The other major projects include the setting up of two new churches for the Christian community in Ulu Simunjan,” he said.

The Assistant Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industry Terminal and Entrepreneur Development (Mintred) said that funds had been already set aside for the construction of the churches.

“There are also various other large projects implemented in the Gedong area including the construction of bridges, water supply projects and more.

“These projects may not be completed within a year because some are still under construction from last year and expected to be completed in the next three years (taking a period of five years,” he said, adding that some projects were also under study.

Naroden thanked the Sarawak government and Land and Survey Department (JTS) for continuing the land surveys and providing landowners with the land titles.

“However, there are still many pieces of lands that have yet to be surveyed in Gedong, it is hoped that JTS will continue to do the survey.
