New Sarawak Tribune, Suara Sarawak bag 25 awards

KUCHING: New Sarawak Tribune (NST) and its sister paper Suara Sarawak (SS) bagged 25 awards at the 32nd Kenyalang Journalism Award ceremony held at Imperial Hotel here last night.

NST reporter Tania Lam Kar Yan won gold in the Sustainability Journalism Award with her story titled ‘Cultural heritage tourism’; while feature writer Priscilla Tawie Sulok won silver for Feature & News Feature Award with her story titled ‘Schizophrenia Patient’ and bronze for Sports Reporting Award. Photographer Ramidi Subari won bronze in the Photo Journalism category with his photo titled ‘Braving the flood’.

Meanwhile, SS journalists won six awards in the Bahasa Melayu category and 17 awards in the Iban Language category.

The following is a list of the winners in the various categories for the awards:

The News Reporting Award (English Language) was won by DD’s Wilfred Syed Pilo and Bong Hai Qing – gold, followed by BP’s Ronnie Teo Teck Wei (silver) and BP’s Lai Pek Sian (bronze).

The BM category was won by Harian Metro’s Nurul Ekhwan Haque Fazlul Haque (gold), Berita Harian’s Muhd Amirul Faiz Ahmad (silver) and US’s Farah Diyana Samsuddin (bronze).

For the Chinese category, SCD’s Chung Siaw Yan won gold while the silver was won by colleagues Chua Yew Yong, Chin Boon Chun, John Lister Chan Sze Chieh, Jeeridyne Eve Chan Sue En and Foo Seng Fatt. See Hua Daily News (SHDN)’s Hii Kheng Juong won bronze.

The Iban category was won by UB’s Dicky Jawa Ding (gold), SS’s Barina Nani (silver) and UB’s Watt Zacchaeus Ngumbang (bronze).

The Sports Reporting Award (English) was won by BP’s Ting Tieng Hee (gold), BP’s Philip Wong Sing Hee (silver) and NST’s Priscilla Tawie Sulok (silver).

The BM category was won by SS’s Awang Shahferi Awang Adeni (gold), SS’s Lydia Aman (silver) and UB’s Dayang Mastura Ismail (bronze).

The Chinese category was won by SHDN’s Tang Harn Ling (gold), SCD’s Chin Kah Joo (silver) and SCD’s Chong You Kiat (bronze).

The Iban category was bagged by SS in total – Indun Silong (gold), Bigol Sulang (silver) and Barina Nani (bronze).

The Sustainability Journalism Award (English) was won by NST’s Tania Lam Kar Yan (gold), BP’s Irene (silver) and BP’s Ten Sheau Inn (bronze).

The BM category was won by SS’s Nick Fletcher Neha (gold), UB’s Sudan Ajang (silver) and Muhd Amirul Faiz Ahmad (bronze).

The Chinese category was won by SCD’s Chua Yee Hui (gold), SCD’s Chia Wee Sing (silver) and SHDN’s Yew Wang Ting (bronze).

The Iban category was won by SS in total – Isabella Nisa Inchang (gold), Barina Nani (silver) and Lina Kunjak (bronze).

The Business and Economic Journalism Award (English Language) was bagged by BP in total – Mohamad Ghaz Ghazali (gold), Sharon Kong Yih Hieng (silver) and Ronnie Teo Teck Wei (bronze).

The BM category was won by UB’s Agnes Tugong (gold), Bernama’s Hamdan Ismail (silver) and SS’s Nick Fletcher Neha (bronze).

The Chinese category was won by SCD’s Chua Yew Yong, Tay Ya Hui, Jeeridyne Eve Chan Sue En and Lee Pei Tze (gold), SHDN’s Yew Wang Ting (silver) and SCD’s Choung Mou Hin (bronze).

The Iban category was won by UB’s Dicky Jawa Ding (gold), SS’s Lina Kunjak (silver) and SS’s Isabella Nisa Inchang (bronze).

The Community Well-being and Rural Development Award (English Language) was won by BP’s Jude Peter Toyat (gold), DD’s Nancy Nais Hsiao Phing (silver) and BP’s Jacqueline Radoi David (bronze).

The BM category was won by SS’s Christina Ulau Lian (gold), US’s Haini Darani (silver) and Bernama’s Zaphne Philip (bronze).

The Chinese category was won by SCD’s Wong Siew Moi (gold), SCD’s Chua Yee Hui (silver) and SHDN’s Lo Kiun Sin and Boon Yun Siong (bronze).

The Iban category was bagged by SS in total – Bigol Sulang (gold), Barina Nani (silver) and Lina Kunjak (bronze).

The Digital Economy Journalism Award (English) was bagged by BP in total – Ten Sheau Inn (gold), Sharon Kong Yih Hieng (silver) and Ronnie Teo Teck Wei (bronze).

The BM category was won by US’s Haini Darani (gold) while UB’s Steve Annuar and Agnes Tugong won silver and bronze respectively.

The Chinese category was won by SCD’s Hii Lu Fang (gold), SCD’s Chia Wee Sing (silver) and SCD’s Jeeridyne Eve Chan Sue En, Hiew May Sze, and John Lister Chan Sze Chieh (bronze).

The Iban category was bagged by SS in total – Lina Kunjak (gold), Barina Nani (silver) and Isabella Nisa Inchang (bronze).

Apart from that, The Photo Journalism Award was won by Bernama’s Muhamad Razali Nordin (gold), SE’s Lionel Benang Chai Teck Siong (silver) and NST’s Ramidi Subari (bronze).

The Photo Essay Award meanwhile was won by The Star’s Zulazhar Sheblee (gold), United Daily News’s Wong Tze Kim (silver) and New Straits Times’s Mohd Radzi Bujang (bronze).

The highlight of the event was the Chief Minister’s Award which was presented by Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg himself. The award was won by Dayak Daily’s Nancy Nais and Bong Hai Cinq for their story titled ‘Female firefighters are real life wonder women’ (English). The Bahasa Malaysia category was won by Utusan Sarawak’s Haini Darani.

The event also witnessed Abang Johari presenting the Sarawak Media Figure Award 2020 to James Alexander Ritchie – a columnist and former executive director of New Sarawak Tribune.
