KUCHING: The reconstruction of the Satok Suspension Bridge, once the pride of Kuching residents, is expected to be completed in September 2019. It is one of the projects under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Transportation supervised by the Public Works Depar tment, with Syar ikat Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit Sdn Bhd as the project contractor.

The new RM8.05 million bridge aims to attract tourists besides helping pedestrians to cross the Sarawak River over to Medan Niaga Satok. It is learnt that the new suspension bridge, which will be 213 metres long and three metres wide, will retain the design of the old bridge.

The new design is according to the British Standard (BS); it includes a tower and key blocks to hold suspension cables and a six-metre tall bridge deck with stairs and ramps at both ends.

All steel materials used are resistant to corrosion and rust.

Meanwhile, members of the public are invited to attend the ground-breaking ceremony of the Satok Suspension Bridge Reconstruction Project tomorrow by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg at 3pm at Kubah Ria, Medan Niaga Satok. The old Satok Suspension Bridge collapsed on Oct 7, 2014 due to its frail condition.
