KUCHING: A new township will be developed in Sebuyau adding to the slew of development projects being implemented in the coastal area.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said a site for the construction of the new township has already been identified.

“We will develop the Sebuyau New Township by following the same concept which we have done in Serian.

“The Borneo Development Corporation (BDC) will be building an administrative centre here,” he told a press conference after officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new township’s housing project in Sebuyau yesterday.

He said the project would include the development of housing schemes to be undertaken by the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA).

“Sebuyau will see rapid development with more infrastructures being developed.

“Secondly, on the socio-economic front which includes housing, I have approved an area in Sungai Ladong for the development of a housing scheme which will benefit the people,” he said.

Most importantly, he said, with the ongoing construction of the Batang Lupar Bridge which is expected to be completed in five years time plus the completion of the retaining wall projects, the agriculture and tourism sector in the area was expected to be developed as well.

Meanwhile, LCDA in a press statement said, the Sebuyau New Township housing project is one of the people’s projects by the state government.

The project, planned on an area of 41.36 acres will involve the construction of 235 units of affordable houses for the locals.

Currently, site preparation work and earthworks are actively being carried out by LCDA.

Construction work on 39 units under the first phase is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022.

Apart from housing project, the Sebuyau New Township master plan which has been approved by the state government also involves commercial components such as two-storey shophouses, three storey shophouses, food courts, markets, cottage industrial premises as well as a petrol station.

Also present were Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Julaihi Narawi and LCDA general manager Monaliza Zaidel.
