SONG: A new water treatment plant will be constructed in Song and Kapit to cater to usage which runs into millions of litres per day (MLD) by people there.

Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi stated that with the allocation of RM80 million by the state government, the plants will be connected to a grid system where it will support one another to supply water in the two areas.

“The current plant in Kapit can only produce 28.5 MLD while demand is 31.5 MLD.

“That is why we see the need to build a new plant and upgrade it to 50 MLD for the area,” he said after the briefing session and official work visit to Song district office yesterday.

He said his ministry is giving its utmost focus to provide facilities such as water and electricity supply as well as internet coverage that can cover the entire rural areas.

“Despite the fact that we have to face the ‘last mile’ challenge where there will always be few new houses built that do not have access to these facilities, the state government will try to provide these facilities so that all residents in Sarawak can benefit from it,” he said.
