BAU: Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep has stressed the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of the wet market here, equating it to preserving the harmony within the multi-racial community.

He noted the significance of maintaining sensitivity due to the diverse population in Bau. “Because we want to maintain the sensitivity, that is why we built this new and completed wet market in the first place.”

He added: “Besides, we have Malay, Chinese, Bidayuh, and even Indian people living in Bau right now, therefore it is important to ensure the wet market is clean for people to be able to buy the meat that is being sold.”

During the inauguration ceremony of the new market today (Feb 2), Henry shared his thoughts on the new wet market, explaining that its construction was prompted by hygienic issues with the old market.

The Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Maritime) added that the new wet market aims to provide a comfortable environment for hawkers to conduct their business, particularly in selling meat.

“The old wet market will be handed over to the Bau District Council (MDB) for renovation and upgrading, creating opportunities for hawkers to continue their businesses.”

Additionally, MDB secretary Ong Chin Ping noted the new wet market’s eco-friendly features, including a rainwater harvesting system (SPAH) to collect and reuse rainwater, aligning with the state’s vision for green buildings and low-carbon cities.

“The raw waste from the wet market will be filtered with the developed grease trap before being channelled to the drainage system.”

Stressing the importance of cleanliness, Ong urged cooperation from all parties, especially hawkers.

The new wet market boasts an open concept with a high roof design, promoting comfortable airflow for both hawkers and visitors.

Notably, all the hawkers in the new wet market are original vendors from the old wet market.
