KAPIT: The newly completed Kapit Waterfront Esplanade has become the town’s latest attraction to the local community and tourists who come to visit.

The RM3.8-million project located along the riverbank of the Rajang River stretching from Kapit Express Passenger Wharf Terminal to Fort Sylvia RC Cargo Jetty has a unique design that includes a terrace concrete slab ideal for watching water sports activities such as the powerboat race and Baleh Kapit Raft Safari, a replica of the canon once used by the White Rajah to defend Fort Sylvia and a landscaping work.

In the morning and late afternoon, a large crowd of locals would gather here to relax and take a breeze of the cool fresh air.

Among those who had visited the waterfront project were Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing accompanied by Kapit Resident Nyurat Keti, Deputy Kapit Resident Galong Luang, Superintendent of the Land and Survey Sagu Unting, Secretary of Kapit District Council Jabang Juntan, Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo and several heads and representatives of various government agencies.

Other elected representatives who had visited the site include Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

Meanwhile, one of the visitors who wished to be identified as King said, “This is a good place to relax after a day’s hard work.

“Looking around, you see the young and the old in a family coming together to enjoy. Many youngsters use their handphone to take pictures. Obviously, they like this place and enjoy the peaceful environment very much which enable them to relax and interact with friends.”

King, originally from Sibu, has now settled in Kapit over the past ten years.

“Kapit people should be grateful to the state government led by Chief Minister Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving this project. GPS’ elected representatives in Kapit led by Masing, Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, Wilson Nyabong Ijang and Jamit also did well in lobbying for this project.”

The other three ongoing landscape beautification projects that are currently in the various stages of construction are the Lily Pond Landscape Development between Jalan Penghulu Nyanggau and Jalan Memorial, Kapit Town Square and Kapit Waterfront Phase 2 landscape beautification.
