LONG SAN (Ulu Baram): A total of 105 students from SMK Temenggong Datuk Oyong Lawai Jau, Ulu Baram were rewarded with incentives during an incentive presentation ceremony held at the school, recently.
The recipients comprised 70 PT3 students who scored 5As and 35 SPM students.
Telang Usan Assemblyman Dennis Ngau in his speech at the event attended by 300 students urged rural students to think big in order to achieve their future dream.
“Thinking big is to visualise what your future life is to be. By thinking and setting a target you will have a purpose in life. You will study hard to achieve your dreams,” he said.
Dennis also advised rural students not to leave their future to fate but instead they have to engineer it from now onwards.
“The future will be the survival of the fittest as more and more people are educated,” he said, stressing that the government was working very hard to prepare a new future suitable to the level of educational attainment of Malaysians.
He also said that various initiatives had been planned and rolled out by the government to ensure Malaysia could compete with the neighbouring countries and the whole world.
On other matters, Dennis reminded schools’ management, PIBG and the community at large to take appropriate steps to protect students from getting involved in drugs.
“All school-going children including in Telang Usan are also being targetted by drug pushers,” he said.
On the students incentive awards organised jointly by the school and its PIBG, Dennis hoped that it would motivate the recipients to strive harder to achieve better academic results.
For students who are not in the list of recipients, he urged them to look at it positively and strive harder to achieve outstanding results in future examinations.
Dennis also praised the new school principal Richard Emang and the school entire staffers for managing to improve SMK Temenggong Oyong Lawai Jau’s public examination results.
“School management and PIBG in the rural areas are facing great challenges especially in sourcing for fund in order to hold
activities. Hence, students must appreciate what is done for them,” he said.
