15,540 Penans have identification documents

MIRI: National Registration Department of Sarawak Head of Special Division, Sylvester Bin Tausin disclosed a total of 15,540  Penans in the state had  identification documents such MyKads or birth certificates.

He said a total of 1, 777 people had been served by the National Registration Department (JPN) in Sarawak through 59 of its Outreach Programmes as of August 31 this year. Last year 4, 098  people were served  from its 58 Outreach Programmes.

The Penan population in Sarawak is estimated at 17,000,  according to Sarawak Planning Unit.

Sylvester said JPN Sarawak had been directed to have the touch-point outreach programme in Baram which has been suggested by MP Baram Anyie Ngau in order to solve the problem of those without documents.

He disclosed  JPN Sarawak started its Special Mobile Unit (UKB) Outreach Programme  back in the 1990s with Kuching covering up to Sarikei,  Bintulu covering upto Belaga, Kapit covering up to Baleh and Kanowit whereas Miri is covering Baram, Limbang and Lawas.

In 2004, JPN Sarawak officially formed its UKB in Kuching, 2009, started its pilot project in Miri Division, and in 2010, expanded to Bintulu and Kapit.

Syvester disclosed this to New Sarawak Tribune after briefing JPN Sarawak UKB Miri Outreach Team on an Outreach Programme to Penan ulu villages in Ulu Baram in Miri yesterday.

The Outreach Programme  to Ulu Baram this time will go to Long Segah, Long Selungo, Long Sait, Long Spigen, Long Kerong, Long Selungo and Lio Mato.

The team will return from Lio Mato to Miri on 12 Sept.

Beside Sylvester, others in the team are Ketua Bahagian

Khas JPN Sarawak Haji Sidek  Bin Rasid, Head of Investigation and Enforcement Section of JPN Sarawak; Affrizan Bin Bujang Lapok, the head of UKB Miri; James Anak Igu, Commissioner of Oath from Miri Court and Registration Assistants.

All together the team comprises 13 people in three vehicles.
