BAU: A total of 157 persons took part in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Retraining Programme, yesterday.

The participants came from 45 villages within the Serembu constituency and the programme was held at the Siniawan Community Hall here.

Among the villages involved were Kampung Puak Krokong, Kampung Siniawan Baru, Kampung Sogo, Kampung Batu Sepit, Kamping Bijongon and Kampung Sega.

The programme’s objective was to expose the participants to the necessary knowledge and skills needed to tackle emergency situations.

“It is a great platform for them to be prepared to overcome disasters in their respective areas.

“With the experience and knowledge given, I hope they can utilise their skills as well as share their knowledge and skills with others,” said Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh during the closing ceremony of the programme yesterday.

He also said that for the Serembu area, they will divide the CERT team into three zones.

“This is so that the CERT team can easily assist each other,” he said.

Kapitan Liem Jiu Fung, who also the village head of Pekan Siniawan, said the programme is beneficial to the people.

“It is very helpful for us to prepare ourselves for unpredictable events in future,” he said.

Azman Mili, who is the village head of Kampung Siniawan Seberang, said CERT’s services were especially useful when floods occur in the village.

“Flood is the main issue that happens in our village, so by having the skills and knowledge from CERT, the volunteers are always ready and are experienced in handling this issue,” he said.

Micheal Dang Mesui, village head of Kampung Skio, said his CERT volunteers are ready to face any disaster in the future.

“Our CERT members are ready and well prepared for any disaster that will occur in the future because they have been thought the knowledge and skills needed during this programme,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kampung Blimbin village head Batik Opop said despite having only 10 CERT volunteers in his village, they are well prepared with the skills and knowledge given through this retraining programme.

“With the knowledge and skills given, we are ready to serve particularly on providing first aid,” he said.

The programme has been organised since 2010 and it is a strategic collaboration organised by the state government under the State Safety Unit with Petronas and supported by Civil Defence Department, Fire & Rescue Department and others agencies.
