KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan branch of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) had from April to Saturday, received 17 complaints related to ‘scratch-andwin’ scam, involving losses of about RM100,000.

However, according to its Enforcement Department chief Firdus Zakaria, the amount was believed to be much higher if more victims were to come forward to lodge their complaints. “Through our investigations, it was found that the syndicates operated in supermarkets by offering free items such as perfume or soap to victims.

“Subsequently the victims would be taken to a rented shop supposedly to proceed with the game where attractive gifts would be offered at discounted prices. After seeing the victim excited about the offer, they would usually offer other items which they claim are much cheaper,” he told reporters at a Hari Raya gathering here, yesterday. He said so far the department had detected seven syndicates operating at supermarkets in Pengkalan Chepa, Tumpat, Bukit Bunga, Tanah Merah and Tunjong.

Most of the victims were senior citizens but a few professionals, including lawyers were also duped by the syndicate members who usually preferred payment be made via credit or debit card, he added. “ T h e d e p a r tme n t wi l l seek the cooperation of various parties including the local authorities to put a stop to the syndicates’ activities in the state.

“Four of the cases have been referred to the Tribunal for Consumer Claims in Malaysia to help the victims get back their money,” he said.-Bernama
