SIBU: 170 single mothers in the Dudong State Constituency attended the Dudong United People’s Party (UPP) Women Wing’s Mid-Auturmn Festival celebration on Sunday night.
The event, held in the basketball court at Poh Yew Road, was officiated by Dudong State Assemblyman, Datuk Tiong Thai King.
Besides the dinner, the single mothers were given gifts presented by Tiong at the event.
Speaking at the event, Tiong said that single mothers needed to stand up on their own in the society despite the adversities they faced in their lives.
He urged single mothers not to feel bad about their status but to go out to work and be good guardians of their children.
“Women become single mothers due to various reasons. And they face many problems due to their status.
“So they need to work hard to earn a living,” he said.
Tiong also advised the single mothers to care for their children.
“You need to give them proper education so they can have good job and not fall into poverty.
“Only with good education can they change their lives and gain the respect of others,” he pointed out.
He added that Dudong UPP Women’s Wing organised many activities every year for the benefit of women. Among the activities were the International Women’s Day celebration, Mother’s Day celebration and many more.
The UPP Women’s Wing chairperson, Kapitan Connie Loh, who also spoke, said that the Mid-Autumn Festival was an important festival for the Chinese.
“It reminds us that we must treasure our family and friends. It also reminds us of the importance of unity and harmony.
“I am really happy that we have 170 single mothers celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with us tonight.
“I believe they miss their loved ones and their family members, especially during this festive season. It’s not easy for them to raise the families on their own. They deserve our respect and we should care for them more,” she added.
