25 illegal gambling raids, 44 arrested Dec 4-10

KUCHING: Ongoing raids against illegal gambling across the state over the past week saw the arrests of dozens of operators and gamblers, said Sarawak Head of CID, Datuk SAC Dev Kumar.

He disclosed that from Dec 4-10, the state police conducted 25 successful gambling raids that resulted in the arrests of 44 individuals. Nineteen of the raids were at illegal 4D counters.

The raids were conducted by teams from CID headquarters and district CIDs. Six raids in Miri and Padawan District were carried out by personnel from CID hqrs while another four raids were carried out by Kuching District CID.

Sibu and Miri had four raids each conducted by their respective district CIDs while Kota Padawan had two.

Meanwhile, Kota Samarahan, Sarikei, Bau, Limbang and Kanowit had one raid each conducted by their respective district CIDs. Dev said the effort to eradicate online gambling continued with raids conducted at 24-hour convenience stores offering reload service to online gamblers.

Five such raids were conducted in Miri, Padawan and Sarikei, resulting in the arrests of eight service providers and seizure of 12 computers and tablets, and cash amounting to RM3,415.

“A total of 19 raids were conducted at counters selling illegal 4Ds in nine districts, resulting in the arrests of 21 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM2,326.

“Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationeries were also seized,” he added. “On Dec 7 at 11pm, a team from CID headquarters conducted a raid on a cafe at Jalan Masjid in Miri.

In the raid, 15 were arrested for gambling Holo, and gambling paraphernalia and cash amounting to RM1,672 were seized. “Of the 44 arrested, 34 were males with the rest, females.

They were aged between 18 and 68 years old. Eight of those arrested were foreigners,” said Dev. All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
