26 new animal bites cases in six divisions

KUCHING: 2 6 new rabi e s cases were reported yesterday in Kuching, Sri Aman, Betong, Samarahan, Serian and Sarikei. Kuching and Serian recorded the most number of cases with seven cases each. In Sri Aman, six cases were identified while Samarahan had three, Betong recorded two and Sarikei with one case.

Based on the report provided by the State Disaster Management Committee (JPVS), all victims were bitten by their pets.

15 of them were dogs and 11 were cats. Since April 1, 2017, 6,091 cases of animal bites have been recorded while 2,405 individuals have received anti-rabies vaccines from local hospitals. JPVS also disclosed that out of 44,248 samples from the pets vaccination and survey programme, 77 samples were rabies positive, in which 71 were from dogs and six from cats.

Members of the public are urged to work together with the local authorities to curb the spread of rabies and to report immediately if the animals, both stray and pets, display strange behaviours.
