KUCHING: Candidates in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14) will be screened by three enforcement agencies namely, the Immigration Department, Royal Malaysia Police Force (PDRM) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed this at a press conference held after the PBB Satok Annual General Meeting at Pullman Hotel here yesterday.
He said he wanted to prevent those who were unqualified or had bad track records from contesting as candidates. He referred to the case of the State Assemblyman who represented Pujut in the State Legislative Assembly this year. The man was believed to have dual citizenship. “The case has now been settled in court.
Hence, we want to avoid such matter from happening again. “In Australia, we have also heard that the Deputy Prime Minister had to step down due to the fact that he was not an Australian. We cannot take for granted that everything is okay here in Malaysia,” said Johari.
The Chief Minister also said that no State Assemblyman/ Assemblywoman would be contesting to become Member of Parliament (MP) as far as PBB was concerned. He hopes that other component parties in Sarawak will follow suit.
