‘3,178 formerly stateless Penans given citizenship status since 2015’

KUCHING: Inform the nearest National Registration Department (NRD or JPN) about the existence of any stateless community especially the nomadic Penans, said Minister of Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.

Fatimah pointed this out when speaking to reporters after officiating at the second convocation ceremony of Rafflesia Academy at Merdeka Palace Hotel, here yesterday.

“Sometime it is difficult to trace the nomadic Penans because they have no permanent living address, especially those living in coastal areas,” said Fatimah.

She also said that a special task force had been formed since 2015 to tackle the issue of stateless people.

“The solution is, we ourselves will go to the ground, and before that we will ask the special force to gather them and we will bring together the Immigration Department, JPN, and the ‘Ketua Kaum’,
