KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has successfully collected 4,320 books under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, the Read with Bernama (3B) campaign programme, since its official launch in March 2016.

3B campaign adviser Datuk Zakaria Abdul Wahab said the collection of the books was done through various activities, such as through the book box placed at Wisma Bernama, the setting up of the Little Free Library (LFL), KL International Book Fair, 3B Bookwalk and the U-Pustaka Literation activity.

“Of the total, 3,140 books have been distributed to the targeted recipients, such as asnaf (tithe recipients), Orang Asli, child refugees and underprivileged students.

“The campaign aims at cultivating reading habit among the people in the country. It is a joint CSR initiative between Bernama and other public and private agencies and non-governmental organisations,” he said when launching the LFL at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Desa Pandan here today.

Also present were SK Desa Pandan headmistress Maheran Abd Halim and the school’s Parents-Teacher Association president Faizal Mohd Arshad.

This is the second handover of books to school’s LFL with the first to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tuanku Muhammad, Kuala Pilah, done last month.

Zakaria, who is also Bernama editor-in-chief, said the LFL initiative was taken to support the government’s agenda of #MalaysiaMembaca under the National Reading Decade campaign to turn Malaysia into a reading nation by 2030.

“The LFL is part of the 3B campaign to cultivate reading habit… It is hoped that the initiative will be able to help create a knowledgeable and well-informed society,” he added. – Bernama
