38 Blood Run starts tomorrow

KUCHING: The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Blood Bank, together with the cooperation of 38 Media, will be holding the ’38 Blood Run’ tomorrow at Vivacity Megamall, Kuching.

Starting at 10am, there are a variety of activities planned such as free health checks, exhibitions, a blood donation drive, and sports events.

For those interested in taking part in the run, there are two categories which are the 5km and 10km run, with the flag-off scheduled to start as early as 6pm.

Registration is still open on the day of the event with a fee of RM30 (without the runner’s t-shirt).

Those who have already registered are required to collect their race packs between 10am to 10pm at the Centre Atrium in Vivacity Megamall; today is the last day for collection.

Participants can also enjoy various discount vouchers such as 20 percent off Borneo Samariang Water Park’s entrance fee and sales discounts at Flexxo Stationary.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen is expected to officiate at the event.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness on blood donation among the public, especially the youths in this state, as the age of blood donors in the state are between the ages of 30 to 60.

On average, at least 200 units of blood are needed each day for hospitals around the state, which means that the SGH Blood Bank needs at least 200 donors a day.

Due to that, the public’s help is needed to donate blood as there is an increase in emergency cases each day, such as road accidents and surgery, whereby blood supply is needed.

In addition to that, some of the current donors are unable to continue giving blood due to health factors and their age.

Through this event, it is hoped that the young generation will come forward and register themselves as donors as their actions can save lives.

Meanwhile, from 13 to 14 October, in conjunction with National Sports Day, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will be holding various activities including the Fit Malaysia Challenge, which are the Penalty League, Juggling Challenge League and Giant Fit Malaysia Snake and Ladder which offers two smartphones to be won.

Members of the public are welcome to join in the event on those two days from 10am to 10pm.
