39 arrests made in 33 police raids

KUCHING: Following the successful eradication of gambling machines (fish, wukong and slot machines) and PC/laptop-based online cyber gambling in the state, the police are now focusing on other forms of illegal gambling, especially illegal 4D.

Complaints against counters selling illegal 4D continue to be received by the police. We receive the most number of complaints of illegal 4D from Kuchingites, especially at Kenyalang Park area, said Head of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Sarawak,SAC Dato Dev Kumar. He said phase two of the police’s total enforcement against illegal gambling, specifically illegal 4D is now ongoing.

Over the past week, from 9 to 15 October, the state police conducted 33 successful raids against illegal gambling in ten districts. These raids included 30 raids against illegal sales of 4D; two raids against gambling at public places and one raid against tablet-based cyber gambling.

Meanwhile teams from CID of State Police Headquarters (IPK) conducted five raids in Kuching and Padawan whereas CIDs from respective district police headquarters (IPKs) conducted six raids in Kuching; five raids in Padawan; five raids in Sibu; three raids in Miri; two raids in Bintulu; two raids in Sarikei; two raids in Limbang; one raid in Kota Samarahan; one raid in Sri Aman and one raid in Lawas. The 30 illegal 4D raids resulted in the arrests of 30 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM4,855. Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationeries were also seized. Two raids conducted against gambling in public places in Kuching and Limbang resulted in the arrest of eight individuals found to be playing ‘holo’.

A man providing reload services for tablet-based online cyber gambling was also arrested in Lawas.

Of the 39 arrested, 28 were males while the rest were females, aged between 16 and 61 years old. One of them was foreigner. All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
