SIBU: Sarawak Police contingent has successfully raided 44 illegal gambling outlets and cyber gambling centres in the state from 15 to 21 October.

Director of Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said that the raids involved 30 cases of selling illegal lotteries and 14 cyber gambling cases.

He added that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had issued a directive regarding the problems of illegal gambling.

“In fact after the directive was issued we are taking the problems seriously. All district police chiefs (OCPD) have been notified and they have been taking actions on the issue.

“The IGP is really serious with the issue and there is no compromise on illegal gambling. So, if any OCPD or officer is found to have betrayed the directive he or she will be transferred immediately,” Wan Ahmad stressed during a press conference held a Sibu District Police Headquarters here, yesterday.

Meanwhile, he said the purpose of his visit to Sarawak was following a directive from the IGP to inspect Sarawak police contingent.

“Our delegation comprises four teams divided into groups A, B, C and D. Sarawak police contingent has 28 districts but our team may be able to go to 20 districts only due to their geographical locations which make it difficult for us to inspect within a day.

“Although we cannot go to all the 28 districts, we will continue to monitor the rest because I have also discussed with PDRM’s Strategic Resources and Technology Department where we will make use of local officials from Bukit Aman to assist us to inspect,” he said, adding that the inspections consist of auditing police stations, lock-ups, vehicles and others to see how far the Sarawak police contingent can do its job and provide efficient services to the public.

“My team will check all the weaknesses of the police contingent in Sibu, Sarikei, Marudi, Miri and Kuching as we are divided into four groups. After the group members have made the inspection, they will submit their reports to me through Chief Assistant Director (KPP) of Bukit Aman’s CID Secretariat, DCP Datuk K Manoharan before I hand over the reports to the IGP,” Wan Ahmad said.
