KUCHING: Around 450 participants attended a community leaders conference on Pemakai Menua and Pulau Galau. The two-day conference, which is held from 24 – 25 January this year, was officiated by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg at Imperial Hotel here yesterday.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Johari revealed that the state government is obligated to the late Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Adenan Satem to try and settle the subject matter. “If we amend the State Land Code, then it must be a law that can be accepted and used by all.

“It should be precise and have no ambiguity so that it will be easier to meet halfway,” he said. The Chief Minister added that it would act as a strong foundation not just for the present, but also for the future generations. “The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is willing to listen and if it’s necessary to amend the law, then we will amend the law,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas attributed the large turnout to the subject matter being one that was close to their hearts.

“Being here is proof of your concern that the issue should be handled appropriately. “Support has been received all over Sarawak, even from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private organisations, which shows that the people have shown great interest in it,” he said.

Also present at the event were Deputy Chief Ministers, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
