534 flood victims placed at three centres

SEBUYAU: A total of three temporary evacuation centres were opened to place a total of 534 flood victims from four villages. Assistant Minister of Coastal Road, Datuk Haji Julaihi Haji Narawi visited the flood victims at the relief centre here, yesterday.

Julaihi praised the relevant agencies under the supervision of the Samarahan Division Resident’s Office for successfully implementing the rescue operations immediately.

“The problem of floods that hit Kampung Seruyuk and Segali here is due to the heavy downpours and high tides which caused the water level to rise and could not be accommodated by the existing drainage system.

“The f loods that hi t the Kampung Baru and Giat Mara are being worsened by a high tide phenomenon a height of 6.3 metre together with strong winds,” he said, adding that the two villages were also located at the estuary of Batang Lupar to the South China Sea. Survey also found that there were a lot of logs and mud dumps in the village area and resident houses.

Meanwhile, Julaihi had told many times that the drainage system problem needed to be upgraded in its area.

“The opening of oil palm plantations near the village causes the water spill that fails to be accommodated by the existing drainage system,” he explained.

Subsequently, he will file an application to the State Government for further action to address the problem “The oil palm plantation companies may also be able to contribute to share with the government to build larger capacity drainage systems in the area,” he said. Also present at the visit was SAO Sebuyau, Ajis Ahmad.
