KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) will establish its own night market which can accommodate up to 60 stalls here at Uni-Central. The night market, which would be operated nightly from 5pm to 12am, is expected to start next month.

According to the Chairman of MPKS, Dato Peter Minos, the government had allocated RM500,000 to develop the night market.

It would be the first of its kind in the area and would be serving 200,000 residents there. “Everything has to be proper as foreigners also love to visit night markets that sell various products at low prices and at the same time, allowing small businesses to increase its income,” he said during a press conference at the MPKS library here yesterday.

At the moment, 43 requests had  been accepted and an interview session had been held with 17 slots still available.

The registration forms can be obtained at the MPKS counter. Peter added that with the night market and its site fee rates of RM100 a month, he hoped that it will prevent traders in the area from opening up stalls in places such as the bus stops. “We don’t permit business activities to be held at bus stops in Kota Samarahan and have started  taking actions against those who still do it.

“This is because we have received complaints saying that the bus stop is not an appropriate place to conduct business,” he said.

He also announced that starting next year, MPKS would be asking traders within the jurisdiction to stop using food packages made from Styrofoam as well as not to provide plastic bags to customers on every Sunday.
