KUCHING: The State Police will be conducting ‘Op Selamat’ for a period of 15 days from yesterday until 1 Jan, 2018 in conjunction with the upcoming Christmas celebration. Deputy State Commissioner of Police, Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim said all branches of the police in the state will be involved in the operation. “A total of 750 police personnel and officers will be involved to ensure the safety of road users and also their houses during this festive season.

“Targeted location by the police during the operation period is an area where road accidents frequently happened (black spot area) and also hotspot area where house breaking crime always occurred,” said Dzuraidi at a press conference held after launching the ‘Op Selamat’ at Emart Batu Kawa near here, yesterday. He also noted that the operation will be implemented based on the Total Enforcement Method because the advocacy and awareness concept did not have much impact on road users.

“With the method all road users will be more careful when driving on the road especially during this upcoming festive season,” he said. Dzuraidi also pointed out that during the operation the police will also work together with the Sarawak Rivers Board and Sarawak Marine Department to focus on the safety of those using waterways throughout the state.

“PDRM and the relevant local agencies will also focus on express boat operators in ensuring the safety of the passengers,” he said. Road accident statistics for this year shows a slight decrease in accident cases compared to last year. For house break-in cases, statistics revealed 17 locations were targeted namely one each in Sarikei and Lubuk Antu, Bau (2), Lawas (2), Mukah (3), Sri Aman (4) and four in Kota Samarahan.
