SANTUBONG: Response towards the inaugural Sarawak World Amateur Golf Championship 2018 (SWAGC) scheduled at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) on July 24 –26 had been encouraging with 80 participants from throughout Sarawak and other states had confirmed their participation.

This was announced by DGCC general manager, Roslan Mohd Salleh who said the participants include those from various golf clubs from Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Bintulu and other states.

“The response is encouraging because many of the golfers are keen to play at DGCC which had just played host to the recent Asian Tour Sarawak Championship 2018 held here last week where 150 professionals from throughout the world had participated,” he said.

According to him, the organisers of the Asian Tour had commended the course conditions and club facilities at DGCC which is also hosting the Sarawak-leg of this year’s Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM) – MNRB Asian Development Tour (ADT) Championship 2018 on September 12-15.

“The course conditions at DGCC are well maintained all the time because we need to comply with the high standards set up the organisers of the recent Asian Tour event and also for the coming ADT tournament which is expecting 150 professional golfers to come here,” Roslan said.

The recent Asian Tour event at DGCC had offered over RM1.2 million prize monies while the coming PGM-MNRB ADT tournament is offering RM225,000 to the winners. Meanwhile, over 70 golfers took part in the SWAGC 2018 pre-launch golf tournament held at DGCC Saturday and among the local dignitaries who participated included Assistant Minister for Corporate Affairs in Chief Minister’s Office, Abdullah Saidol and former State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo, general manager of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), Haji Soedirman Aini and his deputy general manager, Edwin Abit.

The participants were also treated to a welcoming dinner and prize presentation hosted by SEDC chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain who also gave away the prizes to the winners of the one-day event which was divided into invited guests and VIP categories.
