SERIAN: The Youth Section of Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Serian Chapter and MRC SMK Serian jointly organised a First Aid Intensive Course for Youth members at MRC Serian Chapter Headquarter here from 17 to 18 March. The course was attended by 80 members from 10 Youth Units of Serian Chapter namely SMK Serian, SMK Tebakang, SMK Taee, SMK Sebuyau, SMK Balai Ringin, SMK Tarat, SMK Tebedu, SMK Simunjan No. 1, SMK Gedong and SMK Sri Sadong.

The course was meant t o improve the first aid skills of the participants to qualify them for the Basic First Aid and CPR examinations and by putting them together to share their knowledge and experiences. During the course, the participants attended First Aid talks and practical training which included topics such as Emergency Response, Adult CPR, Control Bleeding, Bones, Joint s and Muscles Injuries, Sudden Illness and others.

In his speech at the closing ceremony, chairman of MRC Serian Chapter, Dr Kiu Chiong Chin said that the Fi r s t Ai d Intensive Course was not only meant to prepare the participants for the examination on first aid but most importantly it was to equip the MRC members with first aid knowledge so that they can help others wherever and whenever they are. He added that, “The Red Crescent movement at Serian Chapter is just like a computer.

As the Chapter’s chairman I play the role like the hardware of a computer to provide facilities for training and other activities. While the officers/teachers are just like the software to run the programmes and activities to equip the members with various skills and knowledge such as first aid knowledge and others. He hoped that the officers and members would make full use of the headquarters to conduct training and other activities.

The chairperson of the course, Phang Nyuk Lan expressed her gratitude to all the teachers-incharge, the organising committee and assistants who were the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) and youth members of SMK Serian and all the participants for their active participation and cooperation to make the course a success.

She added that this year the response was good as all the 10 youth units in Serian Chapter participated in the course. She hoped the participants would share the knowledge and experiences they gained from the course with their friends when they returned to their units.

The participants were also told that they would be registered for the Red Crescent First Round Mass Exam. All of them would be called back to the headquarters in the next three months for the centralised exam. At the end of the course, the participants were presented with certificates of attendance. The Head of Assistants Official, Connie Phang Mei Ni received the certificate of appreciations from Dr. Kiu Chiong Chin (R2) with Ms Phang Nyuk Lan (R ). Participants learned to manage “cramp” on the tight. Participants leaned to immobilize a “patient” with injured leg. Participants learned to help a conscious “choking person”.

A participant is practicing the technique of opening airway of the “victim” supervised by the assistant instructor, Connie Phang. A participant is learning to perform CPR on a dummy. Participants listen attentively to speeches.
