KUCHING: At the moment there are 347 Ibans, 439 Kenyahs, 29 Kayans, and 27 Penans who hold identification cards (IDs) with the status of ‘temporary citizen’.
This was a reply by Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family, and Childhood Development Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah to a question posed by Kennedy Chuk Pai Ugon (BN – Murum) during the State Legislative Assembly sitting here yesterday.
“For those birth certificate holders categorised as ‘undetermined’ and MyKAS (an identification document for people born in Sarawak but their citizenship status are yet to be determined) holders in the state, evidence related to their parents have to be brought forward in determining their citizenship.
“The confirmation of one’s citizenship is based on Section 3 of the Federal Constitution, whereby among one of them is to see the marriage status and citizenship of the mother or father at the time of birth.
“With this, then the National Registration Department will update their birth certificates,” she said.
