KUCHING: Police personnel from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police contingent continued with their aggressive raids against illegal gambling last week, especially against agents selling

illegal public lottery tickets (illegal 4D).

Head of State CID, SAC Dato’ Dev Kumar M.M. Sree Shanmugam said for the past week, from the 24th to the 30th of April, the state police conducted 21 successful raids against illegal gambling that resulted in the arrests of 34 individuals. 20 of the raids were against illegal 4D. Most of the raids were done in Kuching.

The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQ and district CID units. There were eight raids conducted by CID Headquarters, namely in Kuching, Padawan and Kota Samarahan. Other than that CID Kuching conducted three raids, CID Miri three raids; three raids by CID Betong; one raid each by CID Sibu, CID Bau, CID Serian and CID Saratok.

The 20 raids on illegal 4D sellers resulted in the arrests of 23 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM7,578. Mobile phones, portable printers, betting slips, calculators and stationeries were also seized. Eight of the raids were conducted in Kuching.

Apart from illegal 4D raids, a raid was conducted at a cock-fighting pit on a field at Stutong, Kuching that resulted in the arrests of 11 individuals and seizure of various gambling paraphernalia.

Of the 34 arrested, 21 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 17 and 71 years old.

All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and Prevention to Cruelty of Animals
Ordinance 1962.

“The operation against illegal gambling in the state will be ongoing,” Dev Kumar warned.

“From the 1st of January to the 30th of April this year (first four months), the state police had conducted 261 raids that had resulted in the arrests of 853 people. 295 gambling machines and cash amounting to RM115,791 were seized. 209 of the raids were against
illegal 4D sellers.

“There will be no let up in our efforts to eradicate illegal gambling,” said the CID chief.
