KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a total of 4,339 road accidents with 87 fatalities in the first three months of this year as compared to the corresponding period last year.

State Police Commissioner, Datuk Mazlan Mansor said as of March, the number of accidents cases reported in Sarawak had decreased by 7.4 per cent (349 cases), compared to 4,688 accident cases last year.

“The number of fatal accidents recorded in Sarawak has also decreased by 14 cases (13.9 per cent) from 101 cases last year to 87 cases this year,” he told reporters while attending the handing over ceremony of 32 Kawasaki Ninja EX 250L motorcycles from Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department to the State Traffic Police Contingent at the parade ground of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters here yesterday.

He said the motorcycles would be distributed, based on priority needs, among the 28 state police districts, mainly for anti-crime and traffic patrol.

When asked to comment on the arrest of a man for allegedly defaming and derogating the Kuching City traffic police in his posting last Saturday, Mazlan said the state police would no longer issue warnings to those who posed sensitive, defamatory or derogatory postings against others on social media.

“Now is the time for us to take action. We will act against those who abuse the social media.

“We will propose to the higher authorities for offenders to be charged in court. We want to protect and maintain the existing peace and harmony,” he said.

Also present were Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Director, SAC Dato’ Mahamad Akhir Darus.
