KUCHING: The Sarawak State Library has purchased a new shredding machine known as the Daejin Kostal Book/Paper Shredder with a maximum capability of shredding five tonnes of paper materials.

The Chairman of Sarawak State Library, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hamid Bugo disclosed that it would be used to destroy or recycle any resources at the libraries or public records in the state while stating that the machine costed RM490,144.

“The purchase of this machine is in accordance with the Sarawak State Library Ordinance 1999 (sub. Cap. A1444), Destruction of Library Resources or Disposal of Public Records.

“The machine is able to destroy files, computer components, cardboards, ribbon tapes, CDs and magnetic disk,” he said during the Chairman’s Annual Address 2018 held at the state library on Monday night.

Also present during the ceremony were the Board Members of Sarawak State Library, Dr Abdul Rahman Deen, Associate Professor Dr Shahren Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, Datuk Alfred Yap Chin Loi, and Dr Rita Manurung.

Hamid also revealed that the library have been developing itself into digitalisation since the year 2000 to promote technological literacy. “This is clearly shown when we hold classes on technological literacy for the staff as well as regular visitors of the library to be able to utilise technology.

“Not only that, we held 92 programmes on Information Literacy in 2017 with a total participation of 6,262. “Even wi th only two main campus of the libraries which are in Kuching and Mi r i , we are able to benefit the people through exposure programmes such as this,” he said, adding that he would want to further expand information literacy programmes in 2018.
