SIBU : About 2,000 people attended a meet-the-people session entitled “Melangkah ke Arah Kegemilang Baru” held at a leading hotel here on Saturday night. The function made merrier with the presence of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president-elect, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking to reporters, he said the comfortable victories in two by-elections showed that the people were confident with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

“The wins showed the people’s confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Selangor Menteri Besar, Amirudin Shari. “It shows that the people are confident in Pakatan Harapan, in Tun Dr Mahathir and Menteri Besar of Selangor,” he said.

DAP’s Wong Siew Ki won the Balakong by- election by collecting 20,508 votes against MCA’s Tan Chee Tiong who amassed 3975 votes. As for Seri Setia seat, Halimey Abu Bakar took the seat with 12,690 votes in beating Dr Halimah Ali of PAS who had 8,890 votes. Earlier, in his speech, Anwar reminded candidates contesting in the elections for the top PH leadership posts to contest in a healthy manner to strengthen the party.

“I will not compromise with any candidate found to be violating the party regulations which had been specified,” he said.

He also reminded the candidates not to be rude, not to engage in physical fights and not to criticise and use abusive words purely to win the elections. Anwar said the party delegates should elect the best leaders among the candidates listed for the contests.

Among those present were Works Minister, Baru Bian, Permatang Pauh Member of Parliament, Nurul Izzah Anwar, Miri Member of Parliament, Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng, Sarawak Parti Amanah Chairman, Fizuan Zaidi and Sarawak DAP Vice Chairman, David Wong.
