SARATOK: A skill training school that stresses technical education ought to be built within the parliamentary constituency here, said Kalaka assemblyman Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz.

He said it was critical for the constituency to have this type of school in order to train students for the real working world.

“Saratok now has six secondary schools so the government should develop a technical institution or a community college to meet the needs for industrial workers in Miri, Bintulu,

Tanjung Manis and Samalaju,” he said.

Abdul Wahab pointed out that perhaps 20 percent of students who had taken examinations in Form 3 and 5 were not pursuing further education.

“We don’t want those who did poorly academically and those who can’t afford to get higher education to be denied chances to get vocational or technical training,” he said.

To support his suggestion, he mentioned Betong Division which now had a community college, PoliMetro, vocational college and the Centre for Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs).

He argued that technical education had an important role in the industrial development of Sarawak which needed many trained workers.

He believes that if there is a technical school here, it would help provide skilful workers for the state’s industries especially for the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score).
