SRI AMAN: A family has their neighbour’s dog to thank for preventing their house from being destroyed in a fire last Friday night.

The dog woke up its owner by frantically barking around midnight in Melugu Scheme areas here. He then looked out of the window and saw an old sofa and motorcycle belonging to the victims were on fire.

The fire was put out by the victims and villagers, who had been alerted by the dog owner, using water from the pipes of their house before a team of firefighters from Sri Aman fire station arrived.

It was understood that the fiery incident occurred when one of the victims who had burned the bark of a lukai tree to keep mosquitoes away did not put out it completely and placed it on the sofa outside his house.

According to a spokesman for Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), upon receiving a distress call at 12.34am eight firefighters in a fire engine and EMRS vehicle, led by Senior Fire Officer II, Jilin Itar, were dispatched to the scene to douse the smouldering sofa and motorcycle.

The operation was concluded at 1.30am yesterday.
