KUCHING: The people of Belaga town are totally cut off from the outside world after a landslide occurred at KM30, MejawahBelaga Road with the town flooded after a heavy downpour on Tuesday evening.
Deputy Chairman of Belaga PBB branch, Datuk Awang Bujang Awang Antek who is also PBB Executive secretary was in Belaga town when the incident occurred.
He said he was planning to drive back but due to the unfortunate incident, he was trapped like the rest of the people there.
Awang said the freak downpour has a devastating effect on the people as there are stretches along the Jiwa Murni Road on Wednesday where more landslides occurred near Kejaman Neh long house making the road impassable compared to on Tuesday. “Now there is flood in Belaga which has never been so high ever since the Bakun Dam was completed.
“This is the first time it reached this level. A bridge spanning Belaga River connecting the Jiwa Murni Road is floode d and there is a huge log stuck underneath the bridge and it is feared that the bridge may give way.
“An excavator could not use the Jiwa Murni Road due to the flood. This excavator is used to repair the section of the road that gave way yesterday evening and to clear the soil on the road after the erosion,” he added. Awang hoped that the authorities would act fast to help Belaga as the flood situation worsens. Meanwhile, Michael Mujah Lihan, a Political Secretary to the Chief Minister who is from Belaga said the roads especially along the Jiwa Murni road are worsening due to the bad weather.
Michael was driving out of Belaga on Tuesday and managed to avoid the landslide.
He urged the authorities concerned to look into the matter urgently as Christmas is round the corner and there will be a lot of movement on the road
