Better understanding of Bidayuh culture through Taee’s Kumau Gawai

SERIAN: Taee’s Kumau Gawai competition aims to develop better understanding of the culture and heritage of the Bidayuhs in Serian.

Organiser, Girumpung Batan Asal Kpg Taee in cooperation with JKKK Kpg Taee hope to bring various single females from Kuching, Bau, Lundu, Penrissen, Padawan and Serian in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Festival, on May 31 2018.

This competition is open to single female fulfilling the following criteria; a Bidayuh (or one of the parents is a Bidayuh), either residing in Serian or other village in Sarawak, aged 18 till 26 years, minimum height of 153cm and have a bright personality.

This year, 11 finalists representing Kampung Git, Taee, Sidanu, Reteh, Lobang Batu, Mundai and Bidayuh Tebakang. These beautiful Kumaus are Dorathy Ann Bohong, Nicole Hartman Ricky, Tiffany Grade, Nurul Asidah bt Mohd Azmi Langam, Agnes Mika, Claudia Robert Telly, Melanie Affandy, Winona Nathasa Banjos, Abbie Vanessa Awel, Vistoria John and Gracezila Ivy Gavin.

All finalists will have the opportunity to win a total of three subsidiary titles such as Most Likes Photo, Kumau Photogenic and Best Traditional Costume to be sponsored by AbgSyuk Photography, Frampton Panchong and Cynthia Maryline Arthur.

The Kumau Gawai Taee winner will walk away with RM1,500, a crown and sape while the first and second runner up winners will receive RM1,000 and RM700 respectively besides receiving a sash, trophies, flower bouquet, beauty products from Avon Malaysia, accommodation cash value voucher worth RM120 and clubhouse membership voucher sponsored by Glenn Ross Ranger, Magdalene Ann Arthur, Annie Magdalene Mading, Andrea Natalia Jaed, Ariva Gateway Kuching Serviced Residences.

Eight consolation prize winners will also receive RM200 cash prize, beauty products from Avon Malaysia as well as a certificate of achievement and vouchers from Entangen Cafe.

Additionally, the Winner of Kumau Gawai Taee 2018 will automatically become Ambassador of Elite Estetik Medispa.

The grand finale of Kumau Gawai Taee will be held at Balu Gambang Bukar Kampung Taee, Serian on May 31 2018 and will be officiated by Bukit Semuja State Assemblyman, John Ilus during the Nyara Mari Sawa 2018dinner.

To enliven the annual event, the organisers will hold a birarak (annual parade) to promote Bidayuh culture to local and foreign residents on 1st June starting 1 pm. 

The Gawai Chairman, Kembi Rigong expects this year’s birarak to be intensified with more participations comprising villagers and surrounding residents.
