BAU: A group of 28 women from the United Kingdom (UK), calling themselves the Bicycle Buddies, are in Kuching to cycle through the rainforest for charity.

The group began their cycling adventure on September 22 and will end on the 28, covering a distance of 50km to 60km per day, passing through Annah Rais Longhouse in Padawan, Siniawan Bazaar in Bau, Kubah National Park and will be ending their journey at Lundu Bazaar.

Their charity slogan, ‘Streets Against Sepsis’, was chosen in dedication to raising funds for sepsis survivors in the UK and to raise awareness. Sepsis is a life threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infections causes injury to its own tissues and organs, or the presence in tissues of harmful bacteria and their own toxins, typically through infection of a wound.

Bicycle Buddies leaders, Mel Greenway and Yvonne Konieczna, had been cycling together for more than 15 years, but the group are not professional cyclists. However, they do enjoy the activity as they are able to explore unique destinations and get to know different cultures.

They also felt very grateful to tour manager, JC Chua and his team for giving them the opportunity to have an amazing experience.

“We are looking forward to what promises to be not only a challenging ride, but also an incredible adventure,” they said.

With members ranging from 25 to 75 years of age, Bicycle Buddies are a diverse group of women who love cycling with a passion for charity, and are looking forward to their cycling adventure. Throughout the charity tour, Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has lent their support to the publicity as well as marketing and promotion in the UK.
