MIRI: Police arrested a suspect less than six hours after he posed as a cop and robbed an Indonesian woman at Batu Niah town near here yesterday.

District Police chief, Assistant Commissioner Lim Meng Seah said the 33-year-old suspect was arrested by members of the Criminal Investigation Department  of the District Police Headquarters at Jalan Bakam at 3.30pm yesterday.

According to him, the woman was robbed at about 9.00am. She had just received her pay and had gone to Batu Niah town to send the money back to her country when the suspect, clad in a policeman’s uniform, stopped her.

“Saying he wanted to check her passport, he took her handbag and subsequently took RM5,000 cash inside.

“The victim, suspecting that the suspect was not a cop, started to scream for help, causing the latter to make his getaway in a Perodua Alza.”

Lim said after the robbery, the victim, who worked as a labourer at an oil palm plantation, lodged a police report.

“Acting  on the information received, police succeeded in arresting the suspect and seizing the police uniform that he used.

“Also seized were cash money and a Perodua Alza,” he added.

According to initial investigations, the suspect worked as a warden at Lambir Prison and did not have any criminal records before this.

Lim said the case was being investigated and that the suspect had been remanded for further investigations.
