KUCHING: The implementation of bioeconomy programmes in East Malaysia will continue to contribute towards realising the long term national Bioeconomy Transformation Programme (BTP) target of achieving RM48 billion in Gross National Income (GNI).

This was revealed by Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau in his speech which was read by MOSTI Secretary General Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhar Yahaya during the BioBorneo & Bioeconomy Day 2017 at Imperial Hotel, here yesterday.

He added, the programmes also created 170,000 new jobs and attracting investment of RM50 billion by the year of 2020.

“Other BTP projects that have been implemented in Sarawak include the conversion of biomass into bio-energy by Olive Energy Sdn Bhd that will generate electricity and will benefit the community of more than 110,000 households in Mukah,

“This is an encouraging sign for Sarawak and it should catalyse the efforts of building a strong bioeconomy in the state for stronger socio-economic growth,” said Madius.

He said, as for the Bioeconomy Community Development Programme (BCDP), it aims to create and to provide job opportunities to more than 3,500 farmers by 2020.

“Each farmer is to have a minimum additional income of RM4,500 per month. This will also have impact on more than 15,000 individuals in the rural communities,

“Furthermore, the BCDP is part of the National Ocean Blue Strategy (NBOS) initiative, as it fits the NBOS criteria in having high-impact, low cost, rapid execution and sustainability component,” he disclosed.

The essence of these projects will enhance the role and contribution of rural community towards the bioeconomy and at the same time elevates the socio-economic status and quality of life or for the citizens, he said.

“I wish to see the creation of more BTP and BCDP projects as well as BioNexus Status companies in Sarawak to further drive this rural development,” he pointed out.

On the event, also held was the exchange of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Biotechnology Diversified Industries Sdn Bhd (BDISB) and the local fishermen and sago smallholders cooperatives with an estimate of 975 participants.
